Making An Impression:
Layering window treatments
Decorating on a budget can bring out the creative genius in us. You want your windows to look like you hired a designer but your budget says otherwise. A good rule of thumb is to remember that form follows function. If dressing a window, start with a practical idea and layer your treatment for added dimension. Creating layers will connect windows with other accessories or furnishings in a room. Layering will enhance the simplicity of the undertreatment making a room look more refined. For example, you’ve selected a common cellular shade and flanked it with silk panels. This added dimension combines elegance with practicality of light control and insulation. Fabrics always add “flavor” to a space, so use lots of it.
Some popular combinations that mix fabrics with hard treatments are:
• Vertical blinds with fabric valances
• Shutters with drapery panels
• Roller shades with fabric valances
• Natural roman shades with drapery panels or valances
• Cellular shades with drapery panels or valances
• Wood or metal blinds with drapery panels or valances
For inside mount windows, order your overtreatment with the minimum 3 _” clearance from wall to back of treatment.
For outside mount windows, your overtreatment must be deep enough to accommodate the undertreatment (5 _” including an additional inch between treatments).
Mix it up and create textural interest or keep it classic with simple lines and details. Remember that your goal is to select treatments that meet all of your functional needs while adding visual beauty or interest to a space.
